about

"I was influenced by choral music" offers Trompie, a MC/deejay-turned-producer who came up from the
back-alleys of Atteridgeville in Pretoria, and is today a well-regarded, well-respected craftsman among
rap connoisseurs and industry associates alike. His, is a rather interesting path, dipped in the multi-
layered vocal intonations of choral music which somehow meandered and caught wind of the early g-
funk explorations of EPMD's Erick Sermon, he says of the legendary producer responsible for bringing
the funkdoobiest sounds of Redman to the mainstream in the nineties.

Trompie started out as a rapper, then deejay, but it was Pretoria's burgeoning rap scene in the 2000s
that saw him trying a hand in audio production, a journey impounded by endless hours of audio
recordings with, among others, Maliq from Ba4za, whom Trompie produced an entire project with him,
as he did with Boywonder (previously known as Ondaground). "I always wanted to go against the grain
and become not just a producer who does hip hop", offers Trompie, further solidifying his left-field view
of what music was/is supposed to be. His is not a conventional approach, not by the long shot!

After gaining mileage through his Blekmarket mixtapes where he remixed songs by the likes of 50cent
amongst others, Trompie chose to not rest on his laurels, opting instead to vary his production
techniques by with a range of live musicians. In 2013, he has become somewhat of a mainstay on
commercial radio, with a fair amount of songs which he crafted (“Go out with me” and “Feel Good” by
Soopa stars, his “You can have it” original version and remix, “The Bumpdigiddy” remixes) reaching pole
position on national, commercial and campus radio charts.
